I have had success with a 2nd hand one from the breakers on my 418 - it lasted for years and is still working (unlike the body work)
I also had success in freeing up my MGF alternator that seized due to lack of use when it was standing for a few weeks. It was cleaned up, soaked overnight in liberal coating of silicone lube (we40) put in a bench vise and "made" to turn with a socket and bar.
I guess it was a "make or break" moment. It worked.
I've used a similar technique to free up my "spare" alternator that I picked up on ebay after I left it outside in the rain and it also seized - OOPS..
