mgf alternator

my alternator has jammed what should I do? try to fix it or replace?

If i get a second hand one. do any other rover/mgs use the same alternator?

I would suggest a new one, i got one recently from a breakers for 25 that lasted 4 days, i then ended up getting a new one from ebay for 85. so it was a bit of a false economy

The more expensive alternator (VVC, aircon, power steering cars) costs 92.50 plus VAT exchange for a brand new (not reconditioned) item from ourselves.

yes I also suggest a new one, I bought not one but two second hand ones for my R400. Both failed within a matter of weeks. The current owner tells me new one I replaced them with is still going strong after 6 years.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Unfortunately money is so tight that I had to choose the cheapest option and get a second hand one. Time will tell if it proves to be a false economy. But at least my car is now back on the road.

I have had success with a 2nd hand one from the breakers on my 418 - it lasted for years and is still working (unlike the body work)

I also had success in freeing up my MGF alternator that seized due to lack of use when it was standing for a few weeks. It was cleaned up, soaked overnight in liberal coating of silicone lube (we40) put in a bench vise and "made" to turn with a socket and bar.

I guess it was a "make or break" moment. It worked.

I've used a similar technique to free up my "spare" alternator that I picked up on ebay after I left it outside in the rain and it also seized - OOPS..

Had to change mine last week ordered from ebay arrived within two days.
