KV6 Timing Gear Tools

I've also posted this in technical but I need local, as in 'down under', advice.

I'm doing the head gasket on my 2002, 75 Classic 25.l V6 and my mechanic has asked about the options to do the timing set up with/without the special Rover tools.

Is it possible to do the timing setup without them? How?
Can they be bought/loaned/rented locally?
Can they be fabricated easily?
Are there pics of them?

our Rover club in Bris just bought a set so members can hire it out for workshops or themselves to do cambelts. You can do it without the locking tools, but even experts say it is unwise.

latest Car Mechanics magazine in the UK has step by step instructions and photos on how to do it....worth ordering over the net ...July August editions

Being as the Landrover Freelander and Kia Carnival share the same 2.5 KV6 motor,wouldn't any of thier servicing depts have these same tools ?

VS1290 Timing Tolls Set

Thanks for your advice and suggestions.

As all the advice points to it being very difficult to attempt the timing set up without the tools, I have ordered the VS1290, Sealey tools set.

It will become available to hire out shortly for anyone who requires it.

Aside from the timing my only issue now, is to determine if a liner has sunk...seems there is little accurate information about liners.

We have measured the liner protrusion and found them all to be approximately 2 thou!

The timing tools are on their way so it's all go to finish the 'head job'

Good news! It is not advisable if at all possible to replace the belts without the tools.

Not a cheap item though!

I would take Daves advice as gospel as I think he has done a few of these before.
Unfortunately he dosn't do house calls to Australia!!!!

5 - 5 thou with a max step between cylinders of 1 thou.

Is there anyway I could get this Kit shipped to the US? I have an 03 LR Freelander and need the kit to put the motor back together. Please help!

If anyone knows the inlet valve opening at TDC or the peak lift angle you can set the cams with a dial gauge and degree plate in exactly the same way as setting vernier pulleys. Trouble is, I've never seen these figures published and I no longer have access to them.

You could set them up with the cams balanced about TDC and it would run OK, but I know this is not the production setting. I think the cams are about 3 degrees advanced from this setting.

You would still have to make up a few tools for holding camshafts and such like.

In terms of sunken liners, the tolerances accept 1-5 thou, but in reality, you really need 3 thou. One of my engines was put together with only 1 thou and it failed.

Re the timing belts,as a matter of interest,a local mechanic who has done a few KV6 motors reckons the belts can be changed without the use of the specific locking tool as long as each belt is changed one at a time.
Not sure if its fact or fiction but looking at it logically,if at any one time at least two of the belts remain in place,I can't see how anything could go out of alignment
